Why do we need proofreading?

Proofreading is not just an icing on the cake. It is an important step. You might have experienced this before – You were watching a foreign language film, but the film was full of subtitle blunders and translation errors; As a result, you found yourself getting distracted by them.

At ACTC, we emphasize on having two rounds of proofreading for every translation work that we did. When a document is being translated, our team of proofreaders would go through the translation painstakingly to spot errors. Your translation may sound fine at first glance, but a simple grammatical error is enough to alter the entire meaning of a sentence.

For example,

1. Mary went out for dinner with John wearing a sexy skirt. (Did John or Mary wear the skirt?)

2. Wearing a sexy skirt, Mary went out for dinner with John.

Translation proofreading is often the final and essential step. By having professionals to proofread and edit the translation, we ensure that the translated content matches the context of the source document. Also, it is necessary to have a native or trained translator proofread the translated document. A spell checker would not be able to catch contextual mistakes, but a native speaker can read beyond the literal or primary meaning of a word.

Besides searching errors in spelling, word usage, grammar and punctuation, our proofreaders also iron out the sentences to make the final product precise and easy-to-read. After all, a poorly written translation would not be able to convey its message properly to the readers.
