Many office ladies are getting used to enjoy a sizable Starbucks coffee each morning on their way to work, some even believe that the caffeine contained in the drink may lead to a boost of their energy. However, one may start to question: How much coffee is the right amount per day? Actually, the optimal amount varies for each person and is related to their individual tolerance and sensitivity. Average caffeine consumption in Singapore is 200mg, or about two cups of coffee per day. However, too much caffeine can have a detrimental effect on one’s work performance. Recent research indicated that, overconsumption of caffeine can cause anxiety, jitters and nervousness, and it can also cause an inability to focus, digestive discomfort, insomnia and irritability.” While overconsumption of caffeine can have a negative effect on performance, normal consumption can be helpful. Studies show caffeine improves mood, mental fatigue, reaction time, alertness, visual attention and other computerized attention tasks.
